Did You Know?

The Black Family has deteriorated more in the last 30 years than it did in the entire 14 decades since slavery!

Our Families:
  • In 1963, when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. declared, "I Have a Dream," more than 70% of African American families were headed by married couples.  Today, 45 years after the Civil Rights Act of 1964, married couples head only 46% of black families.
  • By age 30, only 52% of African American women will marry compared to 81% of white women, 77% of Hispanics and Asians.
  • "Black men and women are less likely to be married and more likely to divorce when we do marry."
--The Black Commentator, Margaret Kimberly, 2004
  • 69% of African American births are to unmarried women, compared to 25% for whites and 42% for Hispanics (AAHMI, 2007)
  • 55% of African American children live with single parents compared to 23% of whites and 31% of Hispanics (AAHMI, 2007)
  • 80% of all African American children can now expect to spend a significant part of their childhood away from their fathers (Robert M. Franklin, "Can the Church Save African American Families?")

Our Finances:

  • Although African Americans are more than 13% of the nation's population, their total net worth is only 1.2 percent of the total net worth of the nation.  This number has not changed since the end of the Civil War in 1865 (The Covenant, 2006).
  • African Americans have the lowest rate of homeownership in America!  Fewer than 50% of black families own their own homes, compared to more than 75% of white families (The Covenant, 2006).
  • 1 out of 3 African American children and nearly 1 out of 4 black people over age 64 live in poverty (National Urban League 2006 Census Poverty and Income Data report).
  • African Americans have a median net worth of about $6,000 compared to nearly $89,000 for white Americans (The Covenant, 2006).
  • 32% of African Americans have a ZERO or NEGATIVE net worth (The Center for American Progress).
